#004 “Oar Else” is for sale, price USD $20,000. She is located on a wet slip in Bear, Delaware USA. She is a mk1 aft cockpit pilothouse cutter (PH-C) with the single spreader mast and no bowsprit
This is hull #4, originally Quester and renamed Oar Else by its previous owner. Built in 1979, Oar Else has endless potential for a new owner. Designed by Robert Dufour, the Corbin 39 is well known as a bona fide bluewater cruiser, recognizable by the iconic flush deck and gorgeous canoe stern. It is solidly made, capable of crossing oceans with ease, and built to last decades. This one has done just that.
Its flush deck makes movement easy and lowers fall risk and the mast is equipped with a tabernacle so that it can be stepped without a crane. Easy access to engine, fuel system, stern log and packing nut. The hull and deck are remarkably solid for a boat of its age, with no noticeable soft spots.
Oar Else’s previous owner began a complete interior refit that was never completed. I, the current owner, have realized that I am not in a place in my life to complete that refit and that this immensely capable boat needs an owner who can realize its huge potential.

Oar Else’s previous owner began a complete interior refit that was never completed. I, the current owner, have realized that I am not in a place in my life to complete that refit and that this immensely capable boat needs an owner who can realize its huge potential. This is a world-class cruising yacht, and with work, will be an amazing investment for the right owner. With some repairs and improvements, Oar Else could cross the Atlantic again with ease or cruise the Caribbean in comfort.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the larger projects that will need to be completed by the next owner:
- Bilge pumps empty into the same PVC outlet as the deck and cockpit drains. Ultimately, these should be routed separately to minimize the risk of topside debris clogging the bilge outlet.
- The 12v system will need to be mostly re-wired and the boat will need new house and engine batteries. There is one deep-cycle battery powering both until this system is brought up to date.
- 110v system works well, but the new owner may want to install a second service to keep up with the power draw of modern appliances. There are breakers ready for a whole second service on the existing panel.
- Most of the running rigging should be inspected before undertaking longer trips.
- The new owner will want to inspect the integrity of the freshwater tanks before using the pressure water system. I have not used this system since I have owned the boat.
This boat is chock full of high quality, durable equipment with many years of service left. The hull itself is built to the highest standards and the quality of build can be summed up by the Corbin 39 Association’s write-up, which states:
“Corbin’s desire to build a very strong hull and deck resulted in a generous lamination schedule with solid fibreglass below the waterline, Airex core above the waterline, and decks built with ¾ inch marine mahogany core. The mahogany deck core was in 4 inch squares bonded to the deck skins on both sides and between the squares. The grid of resin around the edges of the ply helps minimize the migration of water should there be leakage around deck fittings.” – corbin39.org
